Sal A. Arria, MSS, DC was the founder and director of the Santa Barbara Chiropractic and Sports Medicine Clinic from 1978 to 1996 which was one of the first sports medicine clinics in the United States to incorporate a fitness training center within the clinic. During that time, Dr. Arria personally treated nearly 20,000 patients from all over the world and served as a team doctor for numerous state, national and world championship events. From 1980 to 1985 he served the US Track and Field team and was appointed as a team doctor for the 1984 Olympic Games. For 10 years, Dr. Arria was an active member of the Sports Medicine committee for the US Powerlifting Federation and served as a team doctor for numerous national powerlifting championships and three USPF World Championships.
His personal athletic achievements include winning the California State Powerlifting championships three times and was ranked in the top three in the USA in the 220-pound and 242-pound divisions. Dr. Arria was also appointed as a Special Advisor to the California GovernorÃ‚Â¹s Council on Physical Fitness and continues to consult many Olympic and professional athletes. He has appeared on numerous national radio and television shows including CBS, CNBC, ESPN and the Family Channel. He directed the American Institute of Health EducationÃ‚Â¹s 1996 TELLY AWARD winning show The Five-Step Back Solution. Dr. Arria was also the Fitness Program Designer for Kathy IrelandÃ‚Â¹s platinum award winning abdominal training video, ABSolutely Fit.
In 1988 Dr. Arria co-founded and has since served as the CEO of the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), the first organization to certify personal fitness trainers. Since that time, the ISSA has certified 200,000 personal trainers worldwide.
In 2003, Dr. Arria was a founding member of the National Board of Fitness Examiners (NBFE), a not-for-profit organization which is responsible for defining scopes of practice, standards and national board examinations for personal fitness professionals. In 2004, Dr. Arria was elected President of the NBFE by the Board of Trustees.
Frederick C. Hatfield, Ph.D., is Co-founder and President of the ISSA. Dr. Hatfield won the World Championships three times in the sport of powerlifting, and in 1986, performed a competitive squat with 1014 pounds at a body weight of 255 pounds (more weight than anyone in history had ever lifted in competition).
Dr. Hatfield's former positions include an assistant professorship at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and Senior Vice President and Director of Research and Development for Weider Health and Fitness, Incorporated. Dr. Hatfield was honored by Southern Connecticut State University when they presented him with the 1991 Alumni Citation Award. In June of 2000, Dr. Hatfield was inducted into the Powerlifting Hall of Fame, located in York, PA. Then, in 2012 he was inducted into the Connecticut Powerlifting Hall of Fame,. In 2015 he was inducted into the Fitness Hall of Fame. Dr. Hatfield competed in the MasterÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Division in the 1998 World Championships in Olympic Weightlifting.
He has written over 100 books (including several best-sellers) and hundreds of articles in the general areas of sports training, fitness, bodybuilding, and performance nutrition. He has been coach and training consultant to several world-ranked and professional athletes, sports governing bodies and professional teams worldwide. He is known around the world as "Dr. Squat".
As COO for ISSA, Patrick's primary interest is to ensure that ISSA members are provided with the highest quality educational tools for developing their fitness careers.
Mr. Gamboa has been in the fitness industry for over thirteen years and is an industry leader, educator, writer, consultant, coach and trainer whose educational background includes Bachelors and Associates of Sciences degrees in Exercise Physiology and Biology respectively. Upon completing his degree, Mr. Gamboa worked in a variety of different settings, including serving as a biology teacher, trainer and strength and conditioning coach where he contributed to leading the John Muir Mustangs Outdoor Track Team to a 1997 High school outdoor State and National championship. During these initial years, Mr. Gamboa developed his love for the sport of natural bodybuilding and is a natural bodybuilding champion with the NPC, UNBA, ABA and the ACBA having competed in each of the last ten years.

Dr. Knopf is the co-author of the ISSA Senior Fitness Certification course and the ISSA Exercise / Fitness Therapist Certification course. He began his teaching career at Foothill College in Los Altos, California in 1976 as the coordinator of Adapted Physical Education. The program has evolved into the largest in California. Dr. Knopf has been instrumental in developing programs for mature adults, persons with arthritis and chronic pain, persons with disabilities, and the developmentally delayed. He has written three books: Water Workouts, Fitness Over Fifty, and his most recent, Senior Fitness for the ISSA. Dr. Knopf has been writing, consulting and speaking professionally throughout his career and is a frequent guest on television and radio talk shows. Since 1986 he has been a consultant with Stanford School of Medicine for older adult research projects and is a recent recipient of the respected NISOD, Excellence in Teaching Award. Bill Pearl is one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. He is a former Mr. California, Mr. America, and four-time Mr. Universe. Bill Pearl began lifting weights at 11 years of age, and owned and managed world-renowned bodybuilding gyms in Southern California for over 30 years. In the 1980's, Pearl and his wife Judy (also a bodybuilder) self-produced a remarkable book, Keys to the Inner Universe. It is by far the most complete bodybuilding book ever written. It has 638 pages, weights 5 pounds, and contains 1500 weightlifting exercises. In addition to co-authoring Keys to the Inner Universe, Pearl wrote Getting Stronger and co-wrote Getting In Shape.
Bill Pearl travels all over America, Europe, and Japan speaking to trainers, professionals and amateurs interested in physical fitness. Pearl is known for his ability to transform his vast knowledge of fitness training into terms readily understandable to the average person. Bill is over 60 years old and looks at least 10 years younger. His life is a testament to the virtues of physical fitness and sound nutrition.
Mr. Potash is the co-author of Your Lower Back , the first book written by a patient [Warren Potash before becoming a Fitness Therapist] and his doctor. His knowledge of low back pain led to his collaboration with Dr. Gordon and Mr. Filer producing the first program for health club trainers to work with their members who have low back pain .
Warren was the only trainer [eliminating inter-testor reliability issues] to use the Sport Fit Conditioning guidelines and progressions to help almost 200 adolescent female student-athletes improve their athletic performance and minimize their risk for injury.
He has developed a product to help adolescent female athletes [to be launched in 2004] with his colleagues for those female student-athletes who cannot work directly with a trainer and for coaches who want to take a proactive approach for their athletes.
Mr. Potash was responsible for improving team speed for the 1999 Princeton University Tigers softball team and he has successfully trained adolescent student-athletes for basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, and sprinters and distance runners.
Thomas Fahey received BA and MA degrees from San Francisco State University in Physical Education and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, and Motor Development. He is a professor at California State University, Chico, where he was voted professor of the year in 2007. He is an author of 21 books and more than 500 articles.
In athletics, he was All-American in track and field in college. He competed in powerlifting, won 11 straight US Masters National Championships in the discus throw, won the World Masters discus championship, won four consecutive gold medals in the World Masters Games, and was voted USA Track and Field Masters field athlete of the year in 2010. He has coached track and field since 1969. He is a contributing editor of Muscular Development and Fitness Rx magazines.
Jane Frederick, the head Strength and Conditioning coach at the University of California Santa Barbara, has been helping the student-athletes in their quest to be the best for the last five years. One of this country's greatest athletes, Frederick was the United States recordholder in the pentathlon/heptathlon from 1972-1985. The eleven-time national champion was also a two-time Olympian, competing in the l972 and l976 Olympic Games.
A graduate of the University of Colorado, Frederick has a long and varied background in athletics. From 1989-1992 she was first assistant Track & Field coach at the University of Texas where she coached numerous athletes to become national champions. In addition she has served as a consultant to the United States Olympic Committee and USA Track & Field. She is a member of the University of Colorado Hall of Fame, as well as of the Nike Walk of Fame.

Jane's heptathlon PR, set back in 1984, still ranks as the 29th highest point total recorded in the history of the event. She remains the world's 12th best performer (and best American other than JJK).
Jane won the inaugural Mt. SAC heptathlon in 1981. Her score continues to make her the second highest performer in meet history, again behind only JJK.
Jane competed in a number of individual events in the years before the heptathlon was contested at Mt. SAC, posting winning marks in the long jump in 1975 and 1979.
She broke the American record in the heptathlon six times, and won nine national championships in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Jane also competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics.
Dr. Gordon served as the Chief of Musculoskeletal Diseases Branch at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for almost 20 years and retired in June, 1995. Dr. Gordon served as the Cochairman of the NIH sponsored conference, New Horizons in Low Back Pain in November, 1995. Dr. Gordon is the co-editor of the book resulting from the workshop, which was published in 1996. He has been a consultant as well as worked with biotechnology firms in Baltimore, MD and Bethesda, MD.
He is directing the development of the evaluation and exercise programs as well as the implementation system for Sport Fit Conditioning, Inc. He assists in presentations to potential new licensees and directs the educational program for club trainers, as well as participating in active training of the health club trainers. He acts as the non-voting administrator of the Company's Medical Review Panel and co-ordinates all of the group's reviews.
Dr. Gordon has served on numerous committees and task forces and interacted with the research community and public interest groups regarding policy and research status in musculoskeletal diseases. He managed, planned, developed, and evaluated the grant portfolio, as well as promoted research activities and conducted national and international scientific workshops and conferences on musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoporosis, low back pain, hip joint replacement, osteoarthritis, and sports-related injuries.
He played a key role in developing public awareness, biomedical research, and interventions in osteoporosis. He has received many professional awards and has many professional memberships including the Orthopedic Research Society. He is a book editor and has numerous publications to his credit including Sports and Exercise in Midlife in 1994 and New Perspectives in Low Back Pain in 1989. He has lectured on spine research and repetitive motion disorders. He was an advisor to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (including year 2000 objectives) and served on many interagency levels including an active role on several Congressionally mandated task forces. He has a close working relationship with orthopedic manufacturers and is a recognized leader in musculoskeletal research in the United States.
E.J. "Doc" Kreis is co-author of the ISSA's Strength and Conditioning Certification course. Kreis is in his third season as UCLA's head speed-strength and conditioning coach. In addition to working directly with football and men's basketball, he oversees all operations in UCLA's 15,000-square foot weight room.
In 2001, Doc Kreis was named one of ten Master Strength and Conditioning Coaches by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Associationâ€”the highest honor for a strength and conditioning coach. Doc Kreis was also named National Collegiate Strength Coach of the Year in both 1991â€“92 and 1994â€“95, and was the recipient of the 1995 Stan Jones Award. On June 1, 2003, Doc Kreis was inducted into the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame.
Prior to arriving at UCLA, Doc Kreis spent over ten years as an assistant athletic director and the head coach for speed-strength and conditioning at the University of Colorado. He was also the strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Southern (1978-80) and Vanderbilt (1980-85).
Mr. Filer is providing the physical therapy guidelines for this project. He is co-owner of Comprehensive Sports Care Specialists, Inc., in Bensalem, PA and Newtown, PA. He possesses hands-on practical experience in working with patients and physical therapy students for more than 17 years.
Having earned a Master's degree in physical therapy from Hahnemann University, he has attended a variety of seminars and has published a few articles over the past ten years. In his private practice, he evaluates and treats patients, implements rehabilitation programs, and oversees a student physical therapy teaching program. He compliments his physical therapy skills with an effective motivational style that has been positively received by his patients. He acts as the center's coordinator of clinical education and oversaw the education and teaching of physical therapy students to shape and mold their skills to competency levels.
He is an excellent motivator and provides much of the practical and classroom training for the SFC Training Specialist Course. His company has performed all of the Biodex testing of the adolescent female shoulder for SFC.
Lt. Col. Taylor received his BS from Auburn University in Health and Physical Education, with his concentration in Exercise Physiology. He transitioned and applied this knowledge into the United States Marine Corps where as an Infantry Officer he served three tours in Viet Nam. While in the Military, he earned the "USMC Master Fitness Award" and held the USMC record for the fastest time through the obstacle course. Lt. Col. Taylor was responsible for the physical training for the Marine Corp Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina and was the Fitness Specialist at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina. He retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In addition to teaching the ISSA principles at seminars throughout the US, he currently owns and operates a Fitness Training Studio, where he offers Personal Training and provides strength and conditioning for High School athletes.
John Schaeffer is known as a trainer's trainer. He has over 30 years' experience in the health and fitness industry, specializing in nutrition, weight management, and sports conditioning. He is currently working on his dissertation for his Ph.D. in nutrition and has a Masters' degree in fitness science, along with numerous additional fitness certification courses from the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA).
John is also a professor for the ISSA and travels all around the United States, teaching certification courses. He has taught over 100 certification classes for Certified Personal Trainers.
In addition, his desire to help others has led John to write fitness books, nutritional supplementation information pamphlets, and fitness articles, and he has even developed software programs for personalized nutrition and training. He has also designed and developed numerous nutritional supplement formulas. A five-time world champion powerlifter, John has also held numerous world records. He is also a professional kick-boxer, winning a Masters Super Heavyweight World Championship from MACK (Martial Arts Council of Kick Boxing). He has been featured in Powerlifting Video Magazine, Black Belt Video Magazine, and numerous other television and radio shows around the world. John has been awarded the International Sports Sciences Association Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the fields of nutrition and fitness.

John hosts his own radio talk show on: fitness, nutrition, sports, weight training and weight loss. He has written a syndicated newspaper column called "The Fitness Expert" that is carried in 28 different newspapers, and he has won "Trainer of the Year" for 9 years for the state of Florida. John is also the Director of Bodybuilding Exercise for the ISSA (Southeast division).

And the definitive textbook on nutrition science for fitness professionals called The Essentials of Sport and Exercise Nutrition.
Over his career, Dr. Berardi has personally coached and consulted with thousands of people from all walks of life. From everyday people who could be your neighbors, right up to athletes at the highest level of sport. He currently leads the extraordinary coaching team at Precision Nutrition and co-developed Precision Nutrition Coaching, which broke ground as the first entirely web-based nutrition coaching system. Specializing in exercise physiology and nutrient biochemistry, Dr. Berardi received his Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario under renowned sports nutrition researcher Dr. Peter Lemon. He's been an assistant adjunct professor at the University of Texas and a course instructor at Eastern Michigan University. Over the years he's taught university courses in Exercise Science, Nutrient Metabolism, Fitness and Wellness, and Exercise Nutrition.
In his doctoral studies, his research focused primarily on exercise nutrition; specifically, what to eat before, during and after exercise to optimize performance. In his personal life, Dr. Berardi continues to pursue athletics.He's competed at a fairly high level in track and field, rugby and football; he also won a US national junior bodybuilding title back in 1995.
